Hundreds of years before Europeans arrived the Purepecha
Indians from Central Mexico enjoyed an independent & prosperous existence based on a
highly developed copper industry. Today the descendants of these Native American
smiths work copper in much the same way as did their pre-Colombian ancestors. These
artisans use the traditional bonfire method for working the copper with nothing more than
hammers & anvil to form beautifully crafted objects.
New copper is a naturally rosy pink color that
will oxidize with time & develop a rich reds or brown patina. Our pieces are not
lacquered; if you do not wish your copper to oxidize, apply a thin coat of clear wax &
buff lightly.
Look for the artist's signature and the Cobre mark for assurance that your copper piece
was made in the traditional bonfire method using the simple tools of the smith's
trade. None of the Earth's natural resources are being depleted for Cobre, as
our artisans work with reclaimed copper. |
