william moris.JPG (110235 bytes) William Morris Decor and Design
Elizabeth Wilhide
Rich natural colors and simple wooden furnishings: these are fundamentals of modern decor and originated as the radical principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement pioneered in England over a century ago by William Morris.
This book provides the inspiration and specific information you need to re-create the Morris style in your own home, be it a small, modern apartment, a cozy country cottage, or a sprawling suburban house.  Morris style is surprisingly easy to adapt to virtually any interior, and this book is full of wonderful photographs that will provide a wealth of ideas.  One of my favorite books of all time

glasgowschool.JPG (52118 bytes) Glasgow School or Art
- Charles Rennie Mackintosh     James Macaulay
Glasgow School or Art is one of the great works of arts and crafts architecture of the turn of the century.  Charles Rennie Mackintosh's response to a difficult site and demanding brief is creative synthesis of opposites:  austere and delicate, dark and bright, derivative yet innovative.  Whilst the exterior impression is one of imposing grandeur, the building's somber facade and towering outer wall owe much to the Scottish baronial tradition and the interior reveals itself to be a lively and complex set of spaces.  Although quoting art nouveau in some of the detailing, the overall effect looks forward rather than back;  indeed Nikolaus Pevsner was to single out the interior as an early example of the sort of t spatial effects which were later to be central to the modern movement.

redhouse.JPG (74351 bytes) Red House
Edward Hollsmby
Red house, designed for William Morris by his architect friend Philip Webb in 1859, is a seminal Arts & Crafts building.  In 1904 the German scholar Hermann Muthesius described Webb's building as, 'the first private house of the new artistic culture, the first house to be conceived as a whole inside and out, the very example in the history of the modern house'.  It subsequently entered most of the written histories of 'modern' architecture.  Today the appeal of the Red House seems stronger than ever. Required for all Morris lovers

With their bold shapes, angular geometry geometry and rich colors, Dresser's Designs have exercised a powerful influence on modern taste.
