Plaster capitol, 1897
cast and sculpted plaster   15"h x 19 1/2"w x 19"d
SOLD

Designed for the Isadore Heller house in Chicago, this capitol clearly shows the emergence of Wright's own early vocabulary of design.  While it bears traces of the influence of his "leibermeister", Louis Sullivan, the over-riding geometry, symmetry and the high degree of abstraction, even at this early date, indicate that Wright is firmly in control of a new era, a new approach, to the integration of ornamentation with architecture.  This is one of only two original capitols from the Heller house known to exist.  Badly deteriorated, all the capitols were removed and replaced with resin copies during a restoration of the exterior several years ago.  Only two were intact enough to be saved.  This is truly a rare and unique element.
