Cornice panel, 1936
glazed terra cotta 10 1/2"h x 19 1/2"w
x 4 1/4"d
designed for the gymnasium of the Thomas Edison High School, Hammond IN
(demolished 1991)
$975
A robust and lively
design, with its combinations of arcs, curves and semi-circles, all
contained within a strong and solid double square. It would be
dangerous, I think, to read too much into this design, but I wonder when I
look at it how much its location, a gym, had to do with how it looks.

Frieze
panel, 1936
glazed terra cotta 7 1/2"h x 20"w x 7
1/4"d
Oliver Morton School, Hammond IN (demolished 1991)
$975
This is a simple yet beautiful
element, typical of Elmslie's earlier work from the 1910's.
Combining realistic foliage with geometric forms, it is easy to read one
as a version of the other.
