On the left is the beach facade of a
fantastic house, designed by a friend and colleague Sandra Vitzthum, and
architect from Vermont, for a shared client in Michigan. The house
is a sophisticated blend of English Arts & Crafts elements, and drew
inspiration from such diverse sources as William Morris, Edwin Lutyens and
Carl Larsson. Sandy asked if I would help with the interiors and
furniture, which I was happy to do. Our client already had a
collection of nice pieces, so it really was a case of filling in with
specific pieces to complete the picture. On the right is a view of
the entrance hall, with a staircase copied from William Morris' famous Red
House, and some nice Sussex chairs by Morris & Co. The wallpaper
is Compton, a reproduction of a William Morris design that we carry. |

The view of the combined kitchen and dining
room shows how nice and open the plan is. The paneling on the walls
was painted white, a nod to Carl Larsson's Swedish Arts & Crafts
design of the period. On the left is a view of the window seat in
the library. Original leaded glass panels from our client's
collection were incorporated into the new windows, and Morris fabrics were
used on the seat, chair, and pillows. The rug on the floor is a
one-of-a-kind Voysey reproduction that fit the space perfectly. |

On the left is a view of the master
bedroom, with an antique dresser by Gustav Stickley and a custom-designed
new bed. Again, Morris fabrics and patterns are used throughout the
room. On the right is another bedroom with quite a different
feeling. It is far more delicate and feminine, in a way, which is
perfect for a daughter's room. The wallpaper is honeysuckle by
Morris, and another Sussex chair sits next to a paneling-covered closet
with iron hardware. |
