A little over 13 months ago,
my five nephews, four nieces, three sisters, two brothers-in-law, wife and two daughters
all descended on the gallery to begin what I now call The Big Move. We had been working on
the build-out of the new space for several months, and although it was not completed, the
time had come to make the leap. Since it was only across the hall of the building we were
already in, something approaching a human version of ants carrying food back to the nest
developed, with furniture, computers, rugs, file cabinets and vases all making their way
into the new space.
In a surprisingly short time, everything had been moved over, but it has taken a
surprisingly long time to get it all put away and get back into the swing of things. If I
knew then just how upsetting moving would be, I still would have done it, but with a
larger supply of sedatives.
In truth, the new space is much better suited to the things I still want to do with the
gallery. In contrast to 1200 square feet, we now have over 3000, and can now properly
display our inventory of furniture, paintings and decorative arts, as well as provide
ample floor space for our collection of reproduction Arts & Crafts carpets. In
addition, the front third of the space is now devoted to all the lines of high-quality
reproductions we carry. With three large windows looking out onto the main foot traffic
street in the neighborhood, we not only get wonderful natural light but fantastic exposure
to people passing by.
Please plan on stopping by the next time you are in Chicago. We would welcome the
opportunity to show you around the new space. Our hours are lOam to 6pm, Tuesday through
Friday, and 11am to 5pm on Saturdays. If you would like to see views of the new space on

Recently, the gallery acquired three large groups of original Arts 2 Crafts wallpaper and
stencil designs. The material ranges from
large-scale samples of original
Morris c2 Co. wallpapers, all hand-blocked pages and many of them long out of production,
to a wall painters stencil box with over 40 original period stencil cards, to a group of watercolor studies for murals by Alfonso lannelli, the
painter and sculptor responsible for the statues Frank Lloyd Wrights
Midway Gardens. The exhibition will run from July 1 to September 15. Among the highlights
is the original design drawing for the landscape mural by George M Niedecken for the
Brinsmaid house, (see page 4) which was recently found among a group of drawings from
Niedecken s office archives. For more information on the pieces in the show, please
feel free to contact us. To see a complete catalog of the exhibition, please view our
"Current Exhibit" page on our website at www. fitzdecarts. corn.
