| This is a very
special group of rugs we are having made for us by Donegal Carpets, the
original Arts & Crafts firm from Killibegs, county Donegal in Ireland.
They are hand knotted, 100% New Zealand wool, extremely plush and soft,
and come in three distinct color palettes. The palettes for this collection,
which I developed, are wonderful, muted shades
derived from period wool samples, antique textiles and original examples of Voysey carpets.
They are as authentic as possible, and will coordinate with any of the
reproduction fabrics we carry. Additionally, each carpet within a
particular palette, either Summer, Harvest or Fall, will work with any other in
that palette. No more struggling to come up with three or four
carpets that complement each other. Any of these rugs can also be
done as a "border
only" design.

Lily
& Vine

The
Lily & Vine design, with its simple but effective border of curling
acanthus leaves, was shown at an exhibition of the Arts & Crafts
Society in 1896, the first year of Voysey's collaboration with Alexander
Morton, founder of Donegal Carpets. The arrangement of stylized flowers
and plant forms in the carpet's field shows Voysey's skill at creating an
overall flat pattern that still has rhythm and movement. Voysey himself
owned a carpet in the Lily & Vine design, placed in the dining room of
his home, The Orchard, in 1899.

| Donnemara
The Donnemara is a signature
Donegal Carpets design which has been produced in many colorways over the
years. Originals have commanded high prices at auction over the past
decade as interest for antique Donegal Carpets continues to grow. Like all
of C.F.A. Voysey's designs, nature is a point of inspiration, in this
instance roses and tulips; but botanical accuracy is not as important as
the creation of pattern, rhythm and overall composition. The Donnemara,
along with the Wykehamist and Magnolia, shows Voysey's interest in
contrasting the scale of the border elements with those of the field,
creating a wonderful sense of dynamism in the overall design.

Magnolia
More open and
linear than other designs in the GuildCraft Collection, Magnolia has a
wonderful feeling of lightness and delicacy. It is perhaps one of the most
stylized of Voysey's carpet designs, and yet the original design source,
the leaves and blossoms of the magnolia tree, are clearly recognizable.
Again, Voysey creates a skillful interplay of scale between the border and
the field. Our artists' use of colour placement to further define the
design was inspired by the repeating patterns in antique Eastern carpets.

Orchard
Birds were one of
Voysey's favorite design motifs, and in this charming carpet an alert
bluebird peers out from among the flowers, berries, and leaves of the
composition. Note the similarity in the border design between Orchard and
Lily & Vine, which Voysey also used in his own home. These two designs
make wonderful companion carpets.

Tulip & Lily
is a masterful example of Voysey's skill in pattern design; the field is
an intricate repetition of curves, arcs, circles and ovals, all held in
place by the geometry of the border. One of Voysey's most visually and
spatially complex carpet designs, the stylized lilies in the border are
echoed and repeated, primarily as compositional shapes, in the field.
Small touches of bright color enliven Tulip & Lily even further.

Vineyard
Another masterful
design, the Vineyard carpet is a fairly dense, complex composition. Any
sense of heaviness, however, is banished by the complex rhythms that
Voysey establishes, again further enhanced by our artists' placement of color
in the field. There is vertical, horizontal and diagonal repetition in the
field which creates a sense of movement and life. As with all of Voysey's
work, this carpet shows his great understanding of, and equal delight in,
the natural world.

Wykehamist
Designed in 1897,
this carpet is a bold example of Voysey's sense of proportion and
contrasting scale. The Wykehamist is the most abstract of all the
GuildCraft carpet motifs. The elements of the field are large shapes of
color that depict extremely stylized leaves, branches and flowers. As with
many of Voysey's designs from the 1890's, the Wykehamist was also produced
as a wallpaper by Essex & Co., and as a woven textile by Alexander
Morton & Sons, two English companies that regularly executed designs
by Voysey for the commercial market.
